BNP Paribas Wealth Management is delighted to announce the winners of its 2015 BNP Paribas Prize for Individual Philanthropy, now in its 8th year.
2015 Grand Prix
Fayeeza and Arif Naqvi, founders of the Aman Foundation in Pakistan, are this year’s Grand Prix winners. Aman Foundation operates in two fields – healthcare and education – and has built a unique track-record, through grant-giving and direct investment in a series of programmes designed to create sustainable and systemic impact in the country. Fayeeza and Arif Naqvi will be presented with a specially commissioned account of their philanthropic activities at next year’s ceremony.
The Grand Prix honours an individual or family for their overall philanthropic activity, commending the exemplary nature of their actions, their financial engagement, their impact and their long-term commitment.
2015 Jury’s Special Prix
Molly Melching, founder of Tostan in Sénégal, is this year’s Special Prize winner. Tostan engages and empowers African communities through non-formal human rights-based education, taught in local languages, that incorporates rather than rejects traditional culture. Molly Melching and Tostan are particularly well-known for their work on ending female genital mutilation or cutting (FGM/C), a widespread practice in 29 African countries that involves removing the external genitals of girls and young women.
The Jury’s Special Prize recognises a committed philanthropist who has initiated an innovative project and who has been working on the ground to implement it. The Special Prize winner is granted €50,000 for the furtherance of their project.
The laureates were chosen by an independent jury made up of leading figures from across a number of sectors. The jury is chaired by Suzanne Berger, Professor of Political Science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston. In studying the profiles of all the nominees, the jury made their decisions based on various criteria, such as the social impact of the laureates’ philanthropic initiatives, the philanthropists' personal and financial commitment, as well as the professionalism, sustainability and transparency of the projects.
“Our commitment as members of the prize jury is to identify and honor philanthropists who have figured out how to change the world with their gifts. We honor them because we want to inspire others—and ourselves as well” underlines Suzanne Berger.
